📄 Removing & Installing Rear Wheel

Removing & Installing Rear Wheel

Equipment Requirements

Sizes of bolts and axle nuts can differ between models. Ensure you select tools that match the specifications of your particular e-bike.

- Allen wrench(es) corresponding to your retainer bolt and derailleur guard bolt size (e.g., 4mm wrench)

- Adjustable open-end wrench or open-end wrench(es) matching your axle nut size (e.g., 18mm and 19mm)

- Small cable clippers

- Removing the Rear Wheel of Your E-Bike

Taking off the rear wheel may seem daunting, but we'll guide you through the process step by step.

Step 1: Engage Highest Gear

Shift it into the highest gear. Confirm this by checking the freewheel; the chain should be on the smallest physical gear.

Step 2: Remove Retainer Bolt

Once in the highest gear, turn the e-bike over or place it on a bike stand. Ensure you're looking at the rotor side of the rear wheel. Locate the retainer bolt, use the Allen wrench to loosen it, and remove the bolt, setting it aside.

Step 3: Eliminate Rear Derailleur Guard

Move to the other side of the bike, facing the chain, rear derailleur, etc. Confirm that you're in the high gear, then locate and remove the two bolts holding the rear derailleur onto the frame. Remove both bolts and the rear derailleur guard.

Step 4: Unplug Motor Cable

Identify the motor cable running from the rear wheel axle to a plug near the wheel's rim. Remove the zip tie securing the motor cable and unplug it.

Step 5: Remove Axle Nuts

Detach the motor cable hub from the wheel axle, ensuring cables are clear. Use the open-end wrench(es) to loosen and remove the axle nuts on both sides of the rear wheel.

Step 6: Remove The Wheel

Once the axle nuts are off, press the derailleur forward while guiding the wheel off the frame. Carefully lift the chain off the freewheel as you continue removing the wheel.

Locating and Understanding Anti-Turn Washers

Before reinstalling, take note of the anti-turn washers on each side of the wheel's axle. These washers sit inside the frame and are crucial for safe e-bike operation.

Reinstalling Your E-Bike’s Rear Wheel

Reinstalling is simpler than removal. Guide the wheel into the frame, tucking the motor cable and wheel axle through the chain loop. Lift the rear derailleur, hook the chain back onto the freewheel, and check the rotor's position.

Verify the anti-turn washers are inside the frame, then spin the wheel gently backward. Feel the wheel lock into place. Tighten the axle nuts, replace the retainer bolt, reattach the derailleur guard, and reconnect the motor cable. Secure the motor cable with a new zip tie, ensuring the arrows on the motor cable align. The process is complete.
