Choosing an E-Bike for Food Delivery in 2026

For delivery work, the best e-bike is the one that fits your route, carries the load securely and has a workable maintenance and support plan. A large motor number or advertised maximum range cannot answer those questions. Start with the shift you intend to work, then compare complete bike packages.

Define the working day before choosing the bike

Write down the likely distance, number of starts, steepest regular climb, expected load and charging opportunities. Include the trip to your delivery area and the trip home. Then identify where the bike will wait between orders and how you will secure it during collection and handover.

A setup that looks convenient in a photograph may be awkward after several hours of mounting, stopping and handling a loaded bag. Test those movements before making a working-bike decision.

Plan energy, not an optimistic kilometre promise

Battery energy in watt-hours is nominal voltage multiplied by amp-hours. For example, 48V x 20Ah is 960Wh. That describes stored energy, not a guaranteed shift length. Rider effort, repeated acceleration, load, hills, wind and temperature all change consumption.

Use a reserve and learn from actual route data. As a planning example only, if a route used 16Wh/km and you allowed 20% of a 960Wh battery as reserve, the calculation would be 768Wh divided by 16Wh/km, or 48km. This is not a measured range claim for a DiroDi model; the consumption assumption must be replaced with evidence from your bike and conditions.

An approved second battery can extend time between charging opportunities, but it adds cost and weight and requires the correct system. Do not improvise parallel wiring or use a battery solely because its connector fits. See the dual-battery planning guide.

Compare layouts for repeated stops

Primo's low step-through layout and conventional adjustable saddle are worth assessing if you frequently get on and off and prefer a commuter-style pedalling position. Vivo offers a conventional saddle with fat tyres. Rover's bench layout and integrated carrying system create another option, but fit and the actual bag arrangement remain essential.

Use the Rover, Primo and Vivo comparison to shortlist layouts, not to assume that every variant is approved for delivery work. The exact road-use configuration, commercial support arrangements and insurance must be settled before purchase.

Load security matters more than bag size alone

Check the bag's mounting instructions and the rack's rating. Keep the load stable and ensure straps cannot enter the wheels or drivetrain. Verify that the bag does not hide lights, prevent you looking behind or interfere with steering. A large bag carried high on the bike can change handling even when it is not especially heavy.

Do not add a rack's maximum load to the bike's overall load limit. The lowest applicable limit governs the relevant component or complete arrangement. Practise starts, turns and stops with a modest secured load before a full shift.

Check commercial warranty and insurance explicitly

DiroDi's published terms exclude commercial activities from its voluntary warranty. Applicable consumer-law rights are separate. If you are buying for delivery work, ask the team about the available paid servicing, parts and any expressly agreed commercial support before committing. Do not purchase on the assumption that a normal personal-use warranty is a commercial maintenance contract.

Likewise, tell the insurer that the bike will be used for paid deliveries. Ask about theft, accidental damage, liability and transport cover during that work. Government safety rules are part of the setup

For NSW delivery work, SafeWork NSW describes platform induction requirements, high-visibility protective equipment and rider obligations. Its regulatory guidance explains the required clothing and delivery bag or container. Follow the applicable rules and your platform's training rather than treating equipment as optional branding.

The Safe Work Australia delivery-rider resource is a further government starting point for work risks. Plan breaks, weather contingencies and a safe way to manage navigation without interacting with a phone while moving.

Road-use requirements are separate. DiroDi's 1000W bikes are sold for off-road use on private property, not public-road food delivery. For public-road work, select the qualifying variant for your state and check the current rider rules, including Queensland's 2026 changes.

Compare the full cost of staying operational

An ownership budget should include the bicycle, suitable carrying equipment, security, insurance, assembly, servicing, tyres, brake pads and a contingency for downtime. Avoid earnings or payback promises based on a single best-case shift. Order volume, platform terms and your own working pattern can change.

Ask for an itemised quote and a clear service plan. The right purchase is the complete setup you can use legally, maintain and afford over time, with its commercial conditions understood from the outset.
